Study Skills programs
We have 2 unique study skills programs created from personal experience in the classroom and tutoring. They are based on brain research and the study strategy “KWL” (“What I Know”, “What I Want to Know” and What I Learned”). The programs are designed to help students learn how to study consistently in “bite-size” pieces and train their mind to pick out and distill the “nuggets” of the day from class or reading material. Crux of study is based on your child learning to make personal connections to improve understanding.
Since reading plays one of the most critical roles in learning, we conduct a simple diagnostic test to determine how well your child reads – not only in terms of being able to decode and read words fluently but in terms of how quickly and easily your child comprehends what they are reading. Distractibility can play a role in children not gaining proper or sufficient comprehension while reading or listening so we want to find out if this is a factor as well.
7 habits
We teach the 7 habits principles. When motivation is a factor, the 7 habits principles can be applied to help your child make intrinsic connections to learning. Children need to make connections between the courses they currently take and why they benefit them personally. With personal ownership of their life’s purpose and the ability to see how classes relate, the preparation required to excel in school from day to day is easier. Students are more motivated. We place great emphasis on “Begin with the end in mind” and “Put first things first” for academic support. Learning how to place daily study as a priority is one of the greatest habits for academic success.
Wilson reading program
The Wilson Reading system is “an instructional program used to help struggling readers. It’s one of several programs that uses the highly structured Orton-Gillingham approach. WRS is designed for students from second grade up to adulthood.” We offer one-on-one coaching and small group instruction. This program is suitable for those with dyslexia and students who, for whatever reason, are in need of reading education to improve reading and writing skills, fluency and comprehension. We have found this to be an extremely powerful program for struggling readers. Progress is made swiftly and steadily.
Homeschool Help
When we have availability, we offer private homeschool services. Homeschool is offered for any age student and covers the full range of subject areas. We will discuss your child’s needs and tailor a program that fits. Usually, we decide on a program based on the on-line or school curriculum of your choice. Because homeschool can offer a tremendous degree of flexibility, we enjoy the freedom of designing an individualized program with you.
After School Tutoring
We offer tutoring for most content areas and all grade-levels. We also offer “remote” tutoring as an option where in-home visits are not feasible. For remote tutoring we use the advantages of technology such as FaceTime and students taking pictures of their work to hold them accountable. Contact us for more information regarding specific subject area tutoring.
Consultation
The world of education is increasingly complex. Navigating all the situations and circumstances that impact your child “alone” can be overwhelming. Making informed choices in light of your child’s needs can make all the difference. We are here to collaborate with you in our areas of experience and expertise. Our company is dedicated to “support”. We want to support you in the educational needs of your child in whatever way we can. Sometimes just having a place to start asking questions and share our thoughts is all it takes. We need someone to listen who has experience and can also provide emotional support and assurance to move us to the next constructive step. We have consultation packages available. Please contact us for details.
